Miles Franklin Award 2011

Western Australian writer, Kim Scott has been awarded the Miles Franklin Literary Award for 2011 for his novel That Deadman Dance. This was his third novel and he also shared the award with Thea Astley in 2000 for his novel, Benang.

“Big-hearted, moving and richly rewarding, That Deadman Dance is set in the first decades of the 19th century in the area around what is now Albany, Western Australia. In playful, musical prose, the book explores the early contact between the Aboriginal Noongar people and the first European settlers. …Supple and accessible in style, generous in spirit and outlook, That Deadman Dance is a fascinating, powerful portrait of Australia's earliest days.”
